The snake plant, known scientifically as Dracaena trifasciata (formerly Sansevieria trifasciata), is a popular houseplant celebrated for its striking, architectural appearance and low-maintenance nature.
- Light: Snake plants are versatile and thrive in a wide range of light conditions, from low light to bright, indirect sunlight. They will grow fastest in brighter conditions but can tolerate low-light spaces. Avoid prolonged, harsh, direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Allow the soil to completely dry out between waterings. In winter, during its dormant period, water much less frequently-sometimes as little as once a month.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as one formulated for succulents and cacti.
- Temperature: Maintain average room temperatures between 60°F and 80°F (16°C and 27°C). Protect the plant from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it cannot tolerate frost.
- Fertilizer: Fertilize sparingly, as snake plants are not heavy feeders. Feed with a balanced, diluted houseplant fertilizer once or twice during the growing season in spring and summer.
